So I recently purchased the 2017 BMW 330i xDrive but it does not come with Apple Carplay and is disabled as a purchase in ConnectedDrive. The Dealer said that it's because mine was actually manufactured before they added Apple Carplay into their cars. My car currently currently has the iDrive NBT Evo 5.0 which I see is compatible with Apple
So I have a 2018 BMW X3, IDRIVE6, but no wireless antenna or "CarPlay prep" as mentioned from the factory. I'm thinking all I need to do is buy and install a wireless antenna to the IDRIVE unit, and then do the coding to enable CarPlay both full screen and to unlock it. I'm not paying for CarPlay to BMW, I don't care about the warranty concern.
CarPlay works over the Bluetooth in the vehicle but it does have to be put into the car in production, a retro fit is not offered by BMW NA. Customers who love Apple usually prefer CarPlay but as with anything some just cants stand it.
